TREATMENT OF BAD BREATH
Bad breath is a common health problem in the society.the offensive odor of the mouth can be due to various reasons.the main reason is the presence of anaerobic bacteria in the biofilm formed on the tongue.these bacteria degrade the proteins present in the food resulting in the production of some offensive gases like hydrogen sulfide, skatol ect.
The bad smell of the mouth in the early morning is observed in almost all individuals, which can be controlled by maintaining good oral hygiene. Even after cleaning the mouth, some individuals may suffer from bad breath due to a problem in the mouth or surrounding areas. Some general illnesses can also produce bad breath. The exact cause must be identified and treated accordingly. Some common measures to cure or reduce bad breath are discussed here.
1) Oral hygiene:
The mouth should be kept clean at all times to reduce the action of bacteria. After eating, it is essential to gargle with warm water. Even after eating small items such as snacks, candy, cookies, you should clean with water. Brushing should be done twice a day. It is said that brushing in the morning is for beauty and brushing at bedtime is for health.
2) Brushing techniques:
Normal brushing technique should be followed for best results. Many people brush their teeth vigorously, which damages the gums. Brushing after every food and drink can damage the enamel. Toothbrush bristles should be smooth but hard enough to remove food particles from the gaps. The direction of brushing is the most important thing. The direction of brushing is the most important thing. The upper teeth should be brushed down and the lower teeth up, which applies to both the inner and outer surfaces. Next comes the crown of the teeth, where the brushing is done in the anterior and posterior direction, keeping the brush in the same direction, which applies to the upper and lower teeth.
3) Tongue cleaning:
A white or yellowish coating on the tongue can be the cause of bad breath; it is more pronounced in the morning and should be removed twice a day with a tongue scraper. The tongue scraper should be used gently without damaging the taste buds of the tongue.
4) Toothpick:
The toothpick is a small strip of wood or plastic with a pointed end.It is used to remove food particles lodged between the interstices.Very useful after eating meat and fish.It should be used gently so as not to damage the gums.
5) Gargle:
After each meal, it is useful to gargle with warm water. For best results, a little common salt is dissolved in the warm water. Different types of mouthwash are available on the market under different trade names. Gargling with a mouthwash can also reduce bad breath.
6) Eating habits:
Foods containing protein are known to produce bad breath. Example: meat, milk, fish, egg, etc. Some foods are known to produce a particular odor that may be unpleasant to others. It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away and a raw onion a day keeps everyone away. Small foods eaten in between can also cause a bad smell (nuts, fried products, etc.). The most important thing is to maintain a certain regularity in the choice of foods.
7) Water consumption:
Saliva is necessary to keep the mouth moist and to reduce bacterial growth. Saliva production is closely related to the body's water balance and, therefore, sufficient water should be taken to maintain saliva production.
8) Mouth fresheners:
Natural and artificial mouth fresheners can reduce the intensity of bad breath to some extent. Spicy items are commonly used for this purpose. Chewing spices like clove, cumin seed, cardomom, cinnamon, ginger, etc. are useful. All citrus fruits can reduce the bad smell. Mouth fresheners and chewing gums are available in the market. These products are also helpful, but some can cause damage and should be used with caution.
If the above measures don't work, what should you do?
Consider the following:-
1) Remove the cause:
Bad breath is common in some general and systemic diseases such as diabetes, fevers, gastric disorders, liver diseases and so on.
2) Modern medicine:
If bad breath is due to infection, appropriate antibiotics, anti-fungal or anti-viral drugs can help. If it is due to an autoimmune disease or chronic inflammation, steroids can also be used. Saliva producing tablets can also be used.
3) Dental cleaning:
A dental cleaning performed by a dentist can remove dental plaque and tartar. Visit your dentist at least once a year.
4) Cavity filling:
Since cavities are one of the main causes of bad breath, they should be filled by a dentist. In the past, silver amalgam fillings were used, which have now been replaced by synthetic materials. If the pulp cavity is affected by cavities, a root canal can be performed.
5) Tooth extraction:
If the cavities are deep with tooth destruction and bad odor, extraction is the best choice and a dental implant can be placed in the space.
6) Tonsillectomy:
Patients with recurrent tonsillitis may have bad breath due to the offensive discharge and release of pasty material from the crypts of the tonsils, which greatly relieves them after tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils).
7) Psychological counseling:
People who suffer from bad breath may become very depressed and shy away from the public, which hinders their daily activities. These people should understand that all human beings have bad breath, but with slight differences in intensity. Most people control it by taking care of themselves. Each human body has its own smell, which may or may not be tolerable to others. They should be advised to take all the hygiene measures to reduce the intensity of the smell.Improving the quality of life by any means possible can also help.Moral support from friends and family members is necessary for these people.
Some people go to the doctor for bad breath without any real problem. This is part of the somatization disorders. They usually complain of pain, shortness of breath, abdominal discomfort, bad smell, etc. A proper diagnosis is necessary to eliminate the real causes. These patients should be managed with a psychological approach.
8) Homeopathy:
In homeopathy, medicines are selected on the basis of physical, mental, emotional and social aspects of the sick person. Taking all these aspects into account, a constitutional homeopathic medicine is selected and administered in the appropriate potency and dose. Thus, all health problems, including bad breath, will be resolved. Based on the coating on the tongue, the type of odor, the cause of bad breath and other associated complaints, a medicine can be administered to relieve bad breath. In Dr. Robin Murphy's Homeopathic Medical Repertory, 140 homeopathic medicines are listed for bad breath. Depending on the signs and symptoms of the individual, an appropriate medicine is given. Commonly used medicines are arnica, antim crud, pulsatilla, sulfur, psorinum, nux vomica, ars alb, merc sol, kreosot, hekla lava, silicea, asafoitida, graphites, kali bich, nitric acid etc.
Homeopathic mother tinctures like cinnamon Q, kreosot Q, zingiber Q, rhus glabra Q, menthol Q and others can be used for gargling after dilution in water.
